Empowering Young People Through Free Technology Access in St Helens

In an increasingly digital world, access to technology and the internet is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity. For many young people and families in St Helens, however, financial and digital connectivity challenges create significant barriers. To address these challenges, our organisation, in collaboration with a range of partners and with the support of UK Government funding, is stepping up to make a meaningful difference.

Bridging the Digital Divide in St Helens

Through consultations with our members, regular attendees of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, and partners such as St Helens YMCA, St Helens Youth Justice Service, and St Helens Arts & Culture Network, a troubling trend became evident: many members of our community lack access to IT equipment and reliable internet.

This digital divide impacts job prospects, educational success, mental wellbeing, and the ability to stay connected with friends and family. Our new project aims to break these barriers by providing accessible IT facilities at the St Helens YMCA Youth Hub, located on College Street, WA10 1TF.

Free Digital Access in St Helens

Key Goals of the Project

With funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund’s ‘Digital Connectivity for Local Community Facilities’ Grants Programme—supported by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Vola Merseyside, and the Metro Mayor for Liverpool City Region—we are determined to create opportunities for local residents to thrive. Here’s how:

  1. Computer Facility Drop-In Sessions
Open during the YMCA Youth Hub’s operating hours, these sessions will allow individuals to use IT equipment in a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment. This is especially crucial during evenings when libraries and community centres are often closed.
  2. Tablet Loan Programme
Our partners will loan tablets to their clients, particularly for those based in the town centre, ensuring that no one is left behind.
  3. Volunteer Opportunities
The initiative will provide volunteer roles, boosting community engagement while supporting those accessing IT facilities.
  4. Targeted Support for Disadvantaged Groups
While the primary beneficiaries are young people aged 12–17 who work with partner agencies, other demographics—including parents, carers, and asylum seekers or refugees near the town centre—will also gain access to these resources.

Impact: Transforming Lives

The anticipated outcomes of this project extend far beyond IT access. By empowering individuals with digital skills, we aim to:

  • Enhance confidence and self-sufficiency.
  • Improve access to education and employment opportunities.
  • Facilitate access to essential benefits and tax credits.
  • Strengthen social connections and community involvement.

These efforts will help lift individuals out of financial and digital poverty while fostering a stronger, more connected St Helens community.

Challenges and Overcoming Barriers

Despite the transformative potential of this project, challenges remain. For many, prioritising basic needs such as food, rent, and heating means IT access is often sacrificed. Others may feel intimidated by community centres they’ve never visited before. By situating this initiative within the welcoming and familiar environment of the YMCA Youth Hub, we aim to mitigate these concerns and provide an inviting space for all.

A Call to Action for Funders

Our organisation and its partners are committed to creating lasting change. However, the need for sustained and expanded support is critical. We urge funders to join us in this mission by recognising the profound impact that accessible technology can have on our community. Together, we can ensure that no young person or family in St Helens is left behind in the digital age.
