Chatty Café Attendees Try DJing and Graffiti Art in Prescot

Powered by Hip Hop has been awarded funding from the Centre for Ageing Better to deliver a creative community session in Prescot as part of Age Without Limits Day 2026.

Working alongside attendees from the Chatty Café Scheme, the session will invite local residents to explore DJing, graffiti art, music and conversation in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

The Prescot DJ workshop and community graffiti art session will take place on Wednesday 10 June 2026 and forms part of the national Age Without Limits Day campaign, which encourages communities across the UK to challenge ageism and rethink assumptions around ageing.

Graffiti Art Workshop in Prescot

Powered by Hip Hop CIC is best known for delivering Breaking, Hip Hop and creative arts programmes with children and young people across the region. However, this project aims to bring those same creative principles into a different community setting.

The session has been designed around conversation, curiosity and participation rather than performance or technical skill.

“Music, Creativity and Community Connection”

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Try beginner DJ skills
  • Explore graffiti art activities
  • Share favourite songs and musical memories
  • Spend time chatting over tea and refreshments
  • Connect with other local residents in a welcoming social environment

Participants are encouraged to bring along songs that hold memories or personal meaning to them, which will then be mixed live during the session by the PBHH team

Prescot is Challenging Assumptions Around Ageing

The project aims to challenge assumptions that creativity, music culture and learning new skills are only for younger generations.

Through music, conversation and hands-on creative activities, the event hopes to create positive experiences that encourage confidence, curiosity and community connection.

Rather than focusing on age itself, the session focuses on bringing people together through shared experiences and creativity.

Hip Hop culture has always been rooted in community, self-expression and participation, and PBHH hopes the event will introduce those ideas in an accessible and welcoming way.

The Prescot session will take place within a relaxed Chatty Café environment and aims to create a welcoming space where local residents can meet new people, enjoy music and try something creative in a low-pressure setting.

Tom Glynn, Director of Powered by Hip Hop CIC, said:

“Music has a unique way of bringing people together. We wanted to create something relaxed and welcoming where people could share memories, try something creative and enjoy good conversation in a supportive environment“

Part of a National Campaign

Age Without Limits Day is organised by the Centre for Ageing Better and supports activities across the country that help challenge stereotypes and assumptions linked to ageing.

Powered by Hip Hop CIC was awarded a microgrant through the programme to help deliver the Prescot session.

The organisation would also like to thank the Shakespeare North Playhouse and the Chatty Café attendees for supporting the community event.

The project also highlights how creative community activities in Prescot can help bring people together across different generations through music, conversation and shared experiences.

How Powered by Hip Hop Celebrated Lunar New Year in St Helens

How Powered by Hip Hop Celebrated Lunar New Year in St Helens

How Powered by Hip Hop Celebrated Lunar New Year in St Helens

Earlier this year, Powered by Hip Hop CIC celebrated Lunar New Year as part of our LF Funding 2026 activities at KL Dance in Moss Bank, St Helens.

This activity was supported through LF Funding 2026, managed by St Helens Community Foundation.

The session brought together children and families from different backgrounds and communities across St Helens to explore Lunar New Year through Breaking, music, movement and cultural discussion.

As part of the session, we explored the Year of the Horse and connected this to Breaking by practising horse-inspired movements and footwork.

One of the moves was called “Broncos”

Watch the Broncos movement example on YouTube

The young people enjoyed learning how creativity, movement and storytelling can all connect within Hip Hop culture.

We also watched videos featuring internationally respected Asian B-Boys including Hong 10, Shigekix and Hiro10. Their creativity, discipline and unique styles helped spark conversations about how global Hip Hop culture really is, and how people from different countries and backgrounds continue to shape Breaking today.

Some of the videos explored during the session included:

Music also played a big part throughout the session. We listened to Breaking music and Hip Hop tracks that sample traditional Asian sounds and instruments, helping young people explore how music and creativity often connect cultures together.

Young people also exchanged Lunar New Year envelopes and cards as a gesture of kindness, celebration and cultural appreciation. This created opportunities for conversations around traditions, celebrations and learning about different cultures together.

The aim of the session was not to present ourselves as experts in Lunar New Year traditions, but instead to respectfully encourage curiosity, learning and shared experiences through the things young people already connect with — music, movement and creativity.

This reflects the wider aims of the LF Funding programme by helping bring communities together, encouraging learning between cultures and creating positive opportunities for children and families across St Helens.

At Powered by Hip Hop, we believe Hip Hop can help build understanding, confidence and connection between people from all walks of life — and sessions like this are a reminder that Breaking has always been a global culture.

School Crest Mural Created at St Mary & St Thomas CE Primary School

School Crest Mural Created at St Mary & St Thomas CE Primary School

Free Teen & Kids Activities in St Helens – December to March 2026

Powered by Hip Hop recently worked alongside pupils, community participants and graffiti artist Kingsyze Graffiti to transform the outdoor performance area at St Mary & St Thomas CE Primary School with a brand-new school crest mural and values wall.

The project helped bring new life to a much-loved part of the playground after the stage backdrop and surrounding wall had previously been deemed unsafe due to the deterioration of an older art installation. The refreshed space now proudly features the school crest, school values and colourful artwork as the backdrop to the outdoor performance stage

The transformation had an immediate impact on pupils and staff, with children excited to once again use the stage to perform dance routines, showcase their talents and enjoy creative play during lunch and break times.

The Head Teacher, staff team and pupils were over the moon with the finished artwork and the positive change it brought to the playground environment.

Staff said the mural perfectly captured the school’s values and identity:

“BELIEVE, ACHIEVE, SHINE — Believe in ourselves, each other and God; Achieve in all we do; Shine every day!”

As part of the Three Saints Academy Trust, the school wanted the space to feel positive, inspiring and welcoming for pupils using the playground each day.

Teachers and pupils said the mural now makes the school “smile every time they go outside” and that they “just can’t get over the transformation” from the old deteriorated wall into a vibrant and uplifting creative space.

The mural project was designed to be both hands-on and educational for participants. Members of the local community took part in creating the artwork alongside Kingsyze Graffiti and Powered by Hip Hop, with many participants learning spray painting and graffiti art skills for the very first time.

For many participants, this was their first experience using spray paint and contributing towards a large-scale public artwork.

Participants learned:

  • Safe spray painting techniques
  • Colour blending and layering
  • Creative teamwork and planning
  • Public art and mural design skills
  • How creativity can positively transform shared spaces

Several participants commented that they never imagined they would help create artwork displayed permanently inside a school. They were delighted that they could contribute towards making the school environment brighter, safer and more joyful for children using the playground every day.

The project was funded through the LF Foundation Fund and administered by the Community Foundation for Merseyside.

The wider aim of the funding programme was to improve education, creativity and skills development through Hip Hop culture, creative arts and non-formal education.

Through graffiti art, Breaking, DJing and creative workshops, Powered by Hip Hop CIC uses Hip Hop culture as a positive tool to help young people and communities build confidence, communication skills, teamwork and creative expression in engaging and accessible ways.

Powered by Hip Hop CIC would also like to say a huge thank you to Mark Jennings, the Head Teacher and the wider school staff team for providing the opportunity to work together on the project.

As a school that works hard to support its pupils and wider community, it was fantastic to help improve a space that can now be enjoyed by children for years to come while giving participants valuable hands-on creative experience and the opportunity to develop new artistic skills.

Projects like this demonstrate how creative arts, community collaboration and non-formal education can work together to improve shared spaces while helping people develop confidence, pride and a stronger sense of ownership within their local environment.

Powered by Hip Hop CIC delivers graffiti art workshops, murals, youth engagement projects and creative community programmes across St Helens and the wider Merseyside area.

Kirsty Langley from St Helens Invited On Stage with Ne-Yo at Manchester Arena

St Helens dancer Kirsty has gone viral after being invited on stage with Ne-Yo during his Manchester Arena performance.

Kirsty Langley, a former PBHH and UC Crew member, was spotted dancing and enjoying the atmosphere near the front of the crowd before being invited onto the stage alongside Ne-Yo and his professional dancers.

The moment quickly gained attention online, with people praising the St Helens dancer’s confidence, personality and performance energy.

Friends and audience members commented:

“Go on Kirsty!”
“LOVE IT. You absolutely killed it mate.”
“She gave Ne-Yo a run for his money.”

PBHH and UC Crew coaches also loved watching the video, recognising the same passion, happiness and dance energy Kirsty showed years ago while training and performing in St Helens.

UC Crew coaches said Kirsty was always a fantastic dancer, known for her ability to listen to the beat, her passion, confidence and performance energy. She was never one to shy away from a Break Dance battle or dance off.

As a teenager, Kirsty performed and competed in numerous local Breaking competitions and showcases alongside her crewmates Bekkie, Bethan, Gaz, Tom, John, Sinead, Kris and Jade, becoming part of the early UC Crew generation that helped grow Hip Hop and Breaking culture across St Helens and the North West.

The video has been widely shared across Facebook and Instagram, with many people from St Helens recognising Kirsty instantly from her dancing style, confidence and personality. For many former dancers and audience members, it was a proud moment seeing local Hip Hop culture represented on such a big stage.

The story was featured by both BBC News and AOL

The moment has also become a reminder of the long history of Hip Hop and Breaking culture in St Helens, with former dancers, friends and audience members celebrating Kirsty’s confidence, personality and performance energy across social media.

Powered by Hip Hop: Wheelchair Break Dancing in the UK

Powered by Hip Hop: Wheelchair Break Dancing in the UK

Breaking Barriers: Wheelchair Break Dancing at Powered by Hip Hop

We believe Breaking should be for everyone. That’s why Coach Tom recently attended the WheelPower “Engaging Wheelchair Participants in Sport” training course, strengthening our commitment to making Break Dancing more inclusive for wheelchair users.

In the UK, there’s a real lack of education and awareness about how individuals in wheelchairs can get involved in Break Dancing — not just as a hobby, but as competitors and performers too. Powered by Hip Hop is proud to be leading the way in changing that.

Coach Tom has gained new skills and understanding that will help break down barriers, ensuring our classes are open to all abilities. We’ve learned so much from the amazing work at Mill Green School in St Helens and Act for Action in Knowsley, two organisations who are doing incredible things to make dance and sport more accessible for everyone.

Example video from Hiphorens

Making Breaking & Break Dance more accessible

Our hope is that more Breaking and Break Dancing classes across the UK will join us in making sessions accessible to wheelchair dancers. Break Dancing in a wheelchair is powerful, inspiring and belongs in every dance competition.

We are just getting started, and we’re excited for what’s next. Keep an eye out as we roll forward together, making Breaking a space where everyone can shine.

If you’re an organisation or school and would like to collaborate with Powered by Hip Hop on a project or workshop, please get in touch.
